Obituary of Nathaniel Blackmon

Nathaniel Blackmon, 96, passed away, Saturday, July 29, 2017.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Margaret Blackmon; son, Larry Blackmon; daughters, Patricia Lovecamp and Janet Chavez; brothers, Ray Blackmon, Edward Blackmon, and Joe Blackmon; and sisters, Marie Thomas, Lois Durham, Faye Moody and Lyndal Smith.  Nathaniel is survived by his brother, Paul Blackmon; sisters, Ruth Ward, Rachel Mansfield and Mary Ellen Sirmons; nephews, John and Fred Blackmon; nieces, Dianna Sobala, Priscilla Mouton, Linda Hoffmann, Barbara Williams; 11 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren; and a host of many other family and friends.

Nathaniel proudly served his community with Houston Fire Department for 35 years before retiring as Fire Chief. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and playing golf.  Nathaniel was great with his hands and had a mechanical mind.   He enjoyed building things and did the framing, plumbing and electrical for the house in which he lived.  Nathaniel loved traveling and especially enjoyed his trip to Alaska where he got his license to do gold prospecting.  He was affectionately known as “Grandpa” to his family and cherished every opportunity he had to spend time with them.  Nathaniel will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services for Nathaniel will be held at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581.  The visitation will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 5:30 until 8:00 pm.  The funeral service will take place Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Chaplain Garry Blackmon officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, Texas.
