Bobby Lee Powell, 83, of LaPorte passed away January 9th, 2021. Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Lee Powell and Nell Leddy Powell; grandparents, Charles Leddy (Paw Paw) and Elma Leddy (Maw Maw); sisters, Flourine McCullough and Mary Cockerham; brothers, Charles Leddy and Bill Powell. Left to cherish his memory are his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 48 years, Sandra Kay Powell; son, Jay Carruth and wife Lisa; daughter, Kelly Deardorff and husband Steve; grandchildren, Robby Holland, Jake Holland and wife Taylor and Jaymee Carruth; aunt (sister), Britty Jean Deere, and a host of other friends and family. After graduating from McComb High School in 1956 Bobby joined the Marine Corp where he served for eight years with an honorable discharge. Bobby began a long career in Law Enforcement while serving in the Marines in Havelock, North Carolina. In 1970 he moved to LaPorte to join the Police force and retired in 1999 after 29 years of service. During his twenty-nine years of service with the LaPorte Police Department, Bobby served as Sergeant and Lieutenant, before becoming Chief of Police in 1989. Bobby was named Officer of the Year several times by the LaPorte Police Department and named Houston 100 Club Officer of the Year in 1983. The Texas Rangers named him an Honorary Ranger. Bobby was very dedicated to the City of LaPorte and genuinely loved his town. Bobby’s leisure time was spent enjoying his family, hunting, fishing, and monthly trips to Lake Charles with his wife. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Services for Bobby will be: Visitation Tuesday January 12 from 6-8 PM at the Clayton Funeral Home, 201 S. 3rd La Porte, Texas. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Pasadena, 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, Texas. Donations in Bobby’s memory may be made to the Shriners, Wounded Warrior Project or charity of your choice.
