Obituary of Herbert Louis Jamison

Herbert Louis Jamison, 94, passed away on March 6, 2015, at Windsong Village. Herbert was born July 3, 1920, on what is now known as Yost Blvd. in Pearland. The 10th of twelve children of Bert and Martha Jamison Moore, he attended school in Pearland until the family moved to Liberty County near Cleveland, TX in 1931. He graduated from Tarkington Prairie High School in 1938. Herbert served in the US Army Air Force from July of 1942 until his discharge in November of 1945. After his basic and student training, he worked as an airplane mechanic stationed at Orlando, Florida. He served as a flight engineer while stationed at Dalhart, Texas and Grand Island, Nebraska. His overseas duty as a bomber crew chief was spent on Tinian Island. He attained the rank of S/Sgt. Herbert worked for Brown & Root prior to being employed in May of 1947 by Humble Oil & Refining Co. (later renamed EXXON). In March of 1978, he received the honor of being named the Hastings work area “safety superstar” as well as the Baytown District star. In addition to these honors, he was presented with a gold-plated hard hat by the company’s Field Superintendent. He retired as Maintenance Foreman January 1, 1984. Herbert married Doris Buckner in 1938. After their divorce and his service in the military, he married Odessa Gray on April 20, 1946. He and Odessa lived on their 18 acre home at 2702 Yost Blvd. until her death on April 13, 1998. They loved to play dominos with friends, travel to historic places in the summer and enjoyed spending time at their trailer house fishing on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. They always owned some livestock and worked a vegetable garden. In addition, Herbert had a large orange orchard and he enjoyed raising and selling oranges. Herbert was an avid deer hunter and together with family members enjoyed many years of hunting trips to the deer camp which he and his brothers leased near Comfort, Texas. Herbert married Alta McCormack Carbone on June 17, 1999. Alta passed away in 2006, and Herbert continued to live in the home they built until his health failed. He had been a resident at Windsong Village since May of 2013. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his brothers Sam, Jake, Jim, Bert, Will and Quinton; and his sisters Jean Puls, Verna Yost and Emma Wells. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Ann Wooddell of Pearland; a son, Delbert and wife Mollie of Santa Fe, Tx; a brother, Allen of Clute, TX, and a sister Florence Gum of Lubbock, TX. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Crystal McCleskey, John Wooddell and Ronald Wooddell; numerous nephews and nieces; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Pearland Historical Society, P.O. Box 1333, Pearland, TX 77588. A service celebrating Herbert’s life will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway in Pearland.. Interment will follow the service in South Park Cemetery.
