Joyce Evylan Nichols, formerly of Wharton and Katy Texas, passed away Monday, April 27, 2015. She was born Nov 27, 1929 to William and Maudie McGaughey. She married Peter William Nichols on April 23, 1948. She is preceded in death by her husband Pete, parents Buddy and Maudie Ellen; sisters, Bonnie Ruth, Betty Jo, Ethel Rae; and brothers, Billy Dean and Charles David. Surviving her are her daughters, Deborah Lynn (Carl) Henderson, Rebecca Ann (Ali) Difard; grandchildren, Elizabeth Henderson, Jacquelyn (Joseph) Fleurinor, Jessica (Jeremy) Miller, Patrick Difard; great-grandchildren William Fleurinor, Mason Miller. Also surviving are Max Glenn (Helen) McGaughey , Martha Ann McCluskey, Ann (Billy) McGaughey, Alice (Charles) McGaughey, Ethyl Nichols, Rod (Betty) Nichols, Lynette Kay McGaughey. Evylan spent the early part of her life in Humble, TX, surviving polio and the depression. This instilled in her a “never give up” attitude. She would stand toe to toe with anyone, maybe smaller but never outclassed. As a homemaker, she and Pete raised two girls the old fashioned way. They learned manners, cooking, and sewing at their mother’s hand. There were many good times growing up in Katy. Pete built several homes for the family, each better than before. They retired to Wharton, Pete again building another home. They both loved working in the yard, and Evylan never let it overgrow. She maintained it up until her health just wouldn’t allow using the mower. Her last years were spent under the ever increasing shadow of dementia. She received excellent care at the Colonial Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility in Pearland, though their love for her shown more. Funeral services for Evylan will be Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 10:00 am at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W Broadway St., Pearland, TX 77581 with Chaplain John Morris officiating. Final interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park, 3511 E Alabama Rd., Wharton, TX.
