Obituary of Bettie Jean Louis

Bettie Jean Louis, 72, passed away Friday, November 20, 2015. She is preceded in death by her father, James Goode. Bettie is survived by her mother, Dorothy McNeal; former husband, Dr. William G. Louis; son, George Christopher Louis and wife, Kathleen, daughters, Sheila Elizabeth Milner, Jennifer Quarterman and husband, Rommel; grandchildren, Maxwell Milner, Grace Quarterman, Skye and Blake Louis; and a host of other family and friends. Bettie Louis was a wonderful woman whose life can be described by many as an elegance with wholesome quality. Bettie shared her life and wisdom with many including family, friends, and co-workers. A life spent raising her family as well as developing her career in mental health and serving our country. Bettie was a devout Catholic who went every Sunday rain or shine. Bettie was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Bettie shared her compassion and heart with many but most of all was dedicated to her family. Her mother was her mom, best friend, confidant, and her full love of life. They spent all of her life together close in relationship as well as a beautiful friendship. They were synonymous with one another. A special bond that could be seen by all but known by each other. What an amazing love. Her children were her soul. She gave to us unconditionally without fail and loved us beyond measures. The lessons that she taught us were always right although we didn't know it until we became parents ourselves. She gave us so much strength and showed us by example daily how to stand tall and be strong in any instance of life. She knew what we were capable of before we knew it and was proud of each and every accomplishment no matter how big or small. Our hero turned into seeing us as her heroes. Bettie's father of her children, Dr. William Louis was a great support to her and their friendship was genuine. Their love for their children and grandchildren was a special bond that they shared. A friendship that was shared and loved. Bettie loved his wisdom most and how Bill loved his family. Bettie's grandchildren were her absolute light and joy. The raising of their life including their education and extra-curricular activities became her mission. Bettie was their tutor, chauffeur, disciplinarian, au pair, and their Mimi. She became fluent in dance terminology, football plays, and the latest and newest cartoons. Being a grandmother was her largest joy and gave her more purpose to her daily life. Bettie's extended family was a very important part of life. She had many aunts and uncles with a host of cousins. They were all very close as children and created special bonds as adults. The stories and memories were beautiful. The generations grew over the years and the chapters continued. Family units that became stronger over time that had so much history and love. Each of her family members were important to her Bettie was an amazing friend who had friends everywhere not associates but friends. The definition of a friend was truly exhibited amongst Bettie and her circle. Bettie shared friendships of over 50 years with some and the majority of her beautiful friendships have lasted over 40 years. Wonderful memories of college, sorority life, plays, and many adventures in travel. What amazing life stories they shared over the years. Bettie's circle of friends were her sisters that she always wanted. Bettie's dedication to her career was stellar. Her work ethic was perfection. She believed in attendance no matter what. Mental health was what she practiced for over 49 years. Bettie worked as a psychotherapist in many state and local agencies and later in life practiced as a contractor in mental health. She enjoyed her career and loved working with people. Bettie enjoyed her coworkers and they became associates outside of work as well. They respected each other and made it a good atmosphere overall. Bettie served in the US Army for over 25 years and retired as a Lt. Colonel. She dedicated a term to serve our country in Desert Storm as a counselor in Germany to families who had loved ones fighting for our country. As we will miss Bettie and how she touched each of our lives, we most will miss her smile and heart of how she touched us daily with her words, love, and most of all that wonderful listening ear. Bettie is and always will be special not only here on earth but now she will shine upon on us from above. We will always love you and you will always be our hero. Fly beyond the stars and shine bright. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, November 27, 2015 at 10:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, Texas 77025 with Msgr. William L. Young officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
