I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Eilers last year. He was a wonderful attending physician to work with and actually wrote my letter of recommendation for residency. I wish I was able to tell him where I ended up and to say again how greatly I appreciated his support.
I will always remember his kindness and compassion for others (including animals) as well as his genuine interest in students' well-being and education. He will be missed!

I have fond memories of working for Dr. Eilers at the Austin, Texas VA. He was very supportive and kind, and set an example of hard work and excellence as a clinician. He was highly energetic and vigorous, sad and surprising that he left us so soon.

We are all so sad to hear about the loss of Dr. Eilers. I am sending my condolences to his family and wish all of you well and strength in this difficult time. Dr. Eilers was first my attending and supervisor. I learned a lot from him as psychiatry resident. Later he was my colleague and working just two doors beside me for several years at the VA in Dallas. He was a wonderful doctor, very well liked by his patients and well respected and appreciated by all of his colleagues. He was always very thorough in his work. He was a wonderful person to talk with and associate with, very warm and encouraging, we all miss him.
All the best to all

Dr. Eilers was instrumental in the establishment of the Austin Veterans and Families Advocacy Council (AVFAC) to help veterans with mental health issues and their families. He always thought of the veterans first and it showed. Thank you Dr. Eilers for your support over the years and rest in peace my friend.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and other friends. He will be missed.

I am thrilled that I got to see Steven last year at a family function. I only wish I could have seen him more often. We kept in touch through Facebook and am thankful for that. Just knowing you are no longer on this earth puts a hole in my heart. Uncle Stan, myself and our entire family loved you with all our hearts. Peace be with you, Steven.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayers are with your family and his precious Australian Shepard in the coming days and months as you process his passing.
I was not privileged to work directly with Dr. Eilers in my 2.5 years at the VA in Temple, but I have only heard positive wonderful, things about him since I began training in Austin and working in Mental Health. His passing is a huge loss to so many Veteran's, the VISN 17 Region Mental Health Colleagues and the practice of Psychiatry.
May the LORD Bless you and Keep each of you.
Respectfully,

Such a substantial loss for all who knew him. Condolences to all, especially his family.
We at Austin VA consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have had him at the helm of the mental health clinic. While in his administrative role he was more behind the scenes in terms of patient care responsibilities, his staunch commitment to Veterans and to his staff had an incalculable impact. I am thinking of the movie we watch every holiday season, It's A Wonderful Life, that tells the story of a good man who had an impact on his entire community to a degree that he never really understood. Steve was that kind of man and is an inspiration to all of us to spread the love and positive energy in our families, our friendships, our workplace, and in the world. Thank you, Steve.

Steven was a special man, He was so kind and just like you said in the obituary he loved and served our veterans with every thing he had. Working long hours was just how he was.
He loved his daughters even more. He was so proud of the women they had become. And those grandchildren gave him another twinkle in his eyes. I thank God daily for allowing our paths to cross. He will always hold a special place in my heart. As will his daughters and their families. God bless each of you in very special way.
Thank you for the charity information. Do you know if anything will be sent to the Medical School he attended. Something his honor for turning out such a caring physician. Maybe that isn't something he would have wanted.
I miss you girls but Steven kept me updated. Am going to miss seeing those beautiful children as they grow up, could we be FB friends?
Love,
Suzanne

Steve made such a positive difference in work lives of all of us in the Austin Mental Health Clinic, and that difference carried over into our daily lives. We always knew he protected us from the bureaucratic nonsense that he had to endure, I only wish we could have done the same for him. My life is richer for knowing him and I join the many, many associates of mine who will miss his gentle presence for a very long time. My deepest condolences to the family he held so dear.
