Margie Compton September 01, 1919 - July 14, 2014 On the morning of July 14, 2014, Margie “Tutu” Compton died in Christ at her home in Seabrook, Texas, comforted by the faithful visits of family and friends. Margie was 94 years old. “Tutu” is the commonly used Hawaiian term for grandmother and is the name she was called by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and even a few friends. She adopted the name the first time she visited Hawaii, and it was immediately and lovingly accepted by all. Margie was born on September 1, 1919, in Longville, Louisiana to Parents Florence and James Harrington. She graduated from South Park High School and Jefferson Business College, both in Beaumont, Texas. She married Jim Compton in 1950, one year after they met at a Shrine Dance. It was a love that endured through both of their lifetimes. As an artist, Margie owned a ceramics shop in the 1950’s, painted ceramics, china, and oil on canvas. Her friends, family, and many members of the local community are familiar with her beautiful work. She was a certified teacher in porcelain art, belonged to the Porcelain Guild of Baytown, the Porcelain Art Clubs of Texas and International Porcelain Artists and Teachers, the La Porte Retired School Employees and the Heritage Society of La Porte. Mrs. Compton was a valued and respected Administrative Bookkeeper for La Porte ISD for 20 years, she retired in 1981. She continued her art after retirement, mostly china painting and oils, which she sold at local craft shows and shared generously with family and friends. Margie was a member of Seabrook Methodist Church. She was committed to her faith, and sat in bed to read her Bible every night. She lived her life according to that book, was sweet, funny, generous, and filled with love for all family, friends and strangers. Margie is preceded in death by her beloved Husband, Jim Compton, her Son, Ronnie Compton, a Vietnam Veteran, and her treasured Granddaughter, Wendy Carr. She is survived by her Daughter, Patti Benefield and Husband, Lynn Benefield, Grandchildren, David Benefield, Lori Baker, and six Great-Grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday July 17, 2014 from 9AM-11AM with a service to follow at 11AM at Paul U. Lee Funeral Home, 201 S 3rd St, La Porte, TX,77571, Officiated by David Benefield, Grandson of Margie Compton. A burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery, 8501 Spencer Hwy, Deer Park, TX 77505. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, or to the church/charity of your choice.
