Mayor Russell was a very wonderful man! He was very humble, kind, compassionate, understanding, welcoming and friendly. I knew him when I was a Chaplain at the Lou Lawler Seafarer's Center, Morgan's Point (Barbours Cut). Russell, LC Arthur, the late Mayor Norman Malone and the Rev. Jim Scott of the Episcopal Church were my mentors in Masonry. Sad to know his passing away. But I am confident that he is now in the hands of God. Rest eternal grant unto him Oh Lord and let light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Russell, you were the absolute sweetest teddy bear of a man I met. You are special to me and although I only new you for a decade, it seems like forever. Your big smile would light up the room. I will always miss him. I will see you again one day as we gather around the throne of God. Look for me. Don't get into a strong man contest with Gabriel!

Russell will be sorely missed. Although I was his uncle, he felt more like a brother. We loved seeing who could do something the best or strongest. I had to stay on my toes to stay ahead of him. He was tough and a hell of a football player.
I will always remember the great times we had.
See you on the golden streets nephew.

Mr. Applebe, coach, “Big Russ”, Mr. Mayor, and Tom Selleck… I’ll never forget in 9th grade after the Vidor football game we had the ritual end of the game handshake and a brawl ensued on the field and I remember looking back and seeing you with cane in hand and then my dad barrel over the stands to come out on the field to bring back some order. I later found out that you were leading the charge and yelled back for dad to, “come on!”
On a serious note, I’ll always remember the witty things you would say to make us young boys laugh and how contagious your smile was. You were always a positive role model for me growing up and I’m very grateful to have known you. You were one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Angie, my heart breaks for you and your family for the lost of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. I've been praying to have the sadness lifted from your hearts. Even though I didn't see and talk to you guys often in the last few years I've thought about ya'll often. Russell did so very much to help ease my pain with the lost of Robin and then again there he was to help with the sad lost of my dear friend Doug Moore. Your husband was a angel in disguise and will be missed by all who had the honor to know him. If there's ANYTHING I can do for you or your family please let me. Love, Hugs and Prayers are being sent your way. Rest In Peace Russell.
