Vera Hazel July 10, 1910 - March 04, 2014 Mrs. W.M. Hazel, (up thru 1967 Vera Velma Janice), also known to everyone close to her as "MAMA", 103 years old of La Porte, TX passed away peacefully during the early hours of the morning, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 of natural causes. Born in the small community of Grove Hill, Alabama, July 10, 1910, she and a friend hitchhiked to Houston at the age of 16 where she married and began and ended a very long and full life here in La Porte. She outlived 5 husbands, 2 children, and 2 Grand-children, and many siblings and other relatives of her immediate family. When she came to La Porte there were still many dirt roads and few amenities as we know of today. She saw and knew people who still had buckboard wagons and horses. She saw the first cars, radios, TV's, and saw man land on the moon and still was able to live alone at home and cook etc. up until she was 102. She actually had her drivers license renewed at 100 yrs of age, (to our shock and dismay!), but finally was followed home by an officer after an incident at McDonald's, (which she loved) and thank goodness the officer had the presence of mind to relieve her of her driving privileges. She was a firm believer of doing for herself and was stubborn about it. She was probably the best cook who ever lived in this town, (as far as I am concerned) and I was fortunate to grow up around her and learn the "right" way to do southern cookin'!! To say the least, she was a real character and always reminded me of "Granny" of the Beverly Hillbilly's. She was loved and will be missed by many, and I feel fortunate to have had her as my Grandmother. I wouldn't trade my childhood with anyone on the planet. She is survived by daughter, Betty & husband A.J. Rouse, Grandchildren: Penny Goins, Bobby and Danny Rouse, myself (Lynn Sehorne & wife Mary), of La Porte and many numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held at Paul U. Lee Funeral home on 2nd St. here in La Porte Thursday, March 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, and services will be Friday March 7th at 10:00 am.
