Bob Robert McLaughlin
September 13, 2014 - September 10, 2014
Bob McLaughlin, age 81, passed away on September 10, 2014 after a two year battle with lung cancer. He was born September 13, 1932 in Beaumont, Texas, but has called La Porte, Texas home since 1943. After graduating high school, Bob went to Wharton Junior College on a baseball scholarship before joining the U.S. Army in January of 1953. He was on active duty during the Korean War. Upon returning he spent some time hunting, fishing and playing baseball, until he realized the need for a job and then spent the next 37 years working for DuPont at their La Porte facility. Bob was a member of the La Porte Volunteer Fire Department from 1967 to 1974, and was the La Porte Fire Marshal and a Certified Peace Officer from 1975 to 1986. He was a member of the La Porte City Council from 1989 to 1998. After retiring from DuPont in 1992, he volunteered at the Seafarer’s Center and was a member of the Seafarer’s Board of Directors. He was very active with the Bay Area Heritage Society and the Chamber of Commerce. He also spent countless hours as a baseball and football coach for his son’s little league teams. As an avid sportsman with a passion for being on the waters of Galveston Bay, with a fishing pole in both hands, or in duck blind somewhere, he was able to develop numerous friendships that have lasted a lifetime.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife Delpha, sons Brian Dodson, Barry Dodson, and Russell Dodson. He is survived by his son Michael McLaughlin and wife Lola, grandchildren Jennifer Falcone and husband Daniel, Sheila Hanover and husband Jay, Bryan Dodson, Tabatha Dodson, Jana Cambron and husband Josh, Robert McLaughlin, and Victoria McLaughlin, great-grandchildren Kailey, Seth, Jaxson, Kinsley, and Rylee, and his furry four-legged children Katie and Charlie.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 816 Park Dr., La Porte, TX.
