Edna Black July 21, 1917 - October 28, 2011 Longtime Baytown resident Edna Mary Black passed away Friday morning, October 28, 2011 in a Baytown nursing home, at the age of 94. A memorial service honoring her life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Paul U. Lee Funeral Home in La Porte. Dr. Charles Redmond of the First Baptist Church of Pasadena and Dr. Richard T. Kleiman of Faith Presbyterian Church in Baytown will preside. Born July 21, 1917 in Milam County, Texas, she lived with her family in Hull before moving to Baytown at an early age. She was a Robert E. Lee High School graduate and a former REL cheerleader. She attended Lee College before taking a job at the Humble Oil refinery in Baytown, where she worked until 1947, when she married W.B. Black, Jr. It was then that she began a life of service to others -- particularly her family. She was a wonderful mother, and an equally caring and attentive grandmother, aunt and great aunt. Known in her family as either "Mom" or "Granny" or "Miss" or "Aunt Mary", she was a babysitter supreme. She was never any happier than when in the company of one of her "kids" -- her children, her grandchildren, her niece, her nephew, her great-nieces, her great-nephews. She loved them all equally, and tried her best to attend to their every need. Preceded in death and now reunited with her husband W.B. Black, Jr. and her daughter Karen Francis Sitton, Edna Mary is survived by her son John Black and his wife Becky of La Porte; her granddaughter Beth Black Shields and her husband Brad of Austin; her grandson Bill Black of Austin; her niece Mary Hartman Brown of Baytown; her nephew Bill Hartman and his wife Laura, of Richmond; her great-niece Laura Brown Gauss and her husband Joey and their children Sydney and Sam, of Houston; her great-nephew Fred Hartman and his wife Laura, of Austin; her great-nephew Lee Hartman and his wife Shannon and their children Drew and Kate, of Sugar Land; and her great-niece Lizz Sansone and husband Chris, of Sugar Land. Other cherished family members include the late Leon Brown of Baytown; Sue Hartman Atkinson of Hunt; and Dean Sitton of La Porte. In lieu of flowers and other remembrances, the family suggests that you follow Edna Mary's example: do something nice for someone, and don't expect anything in return.
