Funeral Service Wednesday, May 23, 2018 10:00 AM H. Carlos Smith April 04, 1925 - May 20, 2018 The world got a little bit smaller on the evening of May 20, 2018 as we lost a beloved World War II Navy Veteran and proud Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1946. Harry “Carlos” Smith of La Porte, Texas passed away peacefully Sunday evening surrounded by his loving family. Born April 4, 1925 in Port Lavaca, Texas to Frankie Bauer and Henry Charles Smith, Carlos spent his 93 years living a life to be adored by many. Raising four sons, three step-children, and being a loving husband to two magnificent women, Carlos built a career out of life and love. With an infectious laugh and a big smile, he never met a stranger. From his time at Texas A&M to serving in “Uncle Sam’s Navy,” Carlos was a well-traveled man. Yet he always loved the peace of being right at home, working in his yard, watching Aggie football, soaking in the love of his family with a glass of good bourbon and a stogie in his mouth. Carlos is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, first wife Virginia Smith, and son, Harry Carlos Smith Jr. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Doris Jean Smith, and their children Timothy Smith and wife Barbara of Houston; Phillip A. Smith and wife Vicki of La Porte; Michael Smith of Port Lavaca; Janelle Wright and husband Larry of La Porte; Cindy Cole and husband Walter of Hardin; and James Robinson of Baytown. He will be deeply missed by his 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Carlos graduated high school in Port Lavaca Texas, he then attended The Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas (now Texas A&M University), where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering—a career he would develop after his tour with the Navy and establishing his firm, H. Carlos Smith Engineers & Surveyors in La Porte. He would make La Porte, Texas his home in 1963, eventually serving a term as the mayor and becoming a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, The La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club. Carlos was treasured gem in his community, but even more so by his family. From all the sits in a deer blind to the laughs with every yester-year story, the countless family functions and every trip to the ranch, we will all greatly missed our Dad and our Papa. Thank you for the legacy you left behind, we love you dearly. Visitation will be May 22, 2018 in the Chapel at the Paul U Lee Funeral Home From 6:00pm-8:00pm. The service will be Wednesday May 23, 2018 at 10:00am at the River Point Church at 950 Dell Dale Channelview TX with interment at 4:00pm at Green Lawn Garden Memorial Park in Port Lavaca TX.
