Marjorie Van Deventer

Marjorie Van Deventer, born Marjorie Beth Jenn in Houston on Dec. 4, 1927, grew up at 6622 Auden, just off Bellaire Boulevard. At 16 she began her college career graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in business accounting. She married Ray E. Van Deventer in 1951 and soon moved to La Porte where he owned and operated V&H Furniture. In 1961 she started working at the furniture store as an interior decorator. In the 70’s she opened Van Deventer Furniture Rental with stores in both Baytown and Beaumont. She was also a long time member of the sorority Beta Sigma Phi and the Houston Yacht Club.
She died peacefully around 8 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2009. Her wishes were to be cremated and buried beside her husband at Forest Park Cemetery in Houston.
Her memorial service will be held at Paul U. Lee-La Porte Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, and followed by a reception at First United Methodist Church La Porte.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, and her son, Rick, and is survived by her son, Daryl Van Deventer, daughter-in-law, Cindy Van Deventer, grandson, Billy Van Deventer, granddaughter, Amy Benner and great grandson, Rylan Ray Harrer.
