Obituary of John West

John West December 19, 1917 - July 02, 2007 John R. (Jack) West, 89, of Houston passed away peacefully on Monday July 2, 2007. He was born December 19, 1917 in Dallas, TX to John R. West, Jr. and Avis Moore West. He graduated from Texas A & M in 1940 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He married Ouida January on August 31, 1940. The couple moved to Houston, TX in 1951, where he founded his company Joist Inc. He served as a Deacon at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, a Scout Master of Troop 666 at Chapelwood Methodist Church and as a board member and President of the Steel Joists Institute. He was also a founding member of The Houston Racquet Club, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Downtown Rotary Club. He was an avid horseman, enjoyed tennis and golf, and taking photographs, especially of his children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Ouida, sons Rob West and wife Linda, Alan West and wife Marilyn, grandchildren Carol Bleyle and husband Mike, Kristi Craig and husband Bruce, Courtney Follett and husband Jeff, Ryan West and wife Karen, Natalie Bechtol and husband Carter, and great grandchildren Jack Craig, Kate Craig, Cole Follett, Blake Follett, and Cade West. A Memorial Service will be held Friday July 6, 2007 at 10 A.M. in the Calkins Chapel at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024. A reception for family and friends will be held following the service.
