John Calvin Hambrick, 79, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ida Mae Davis and Robert Hambrick and sister, Marie Land. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 42 years, Marilyn Hambrick; son, Ronnie Gray; daughter, Gwenda Moser; brothers, Aaron Hambrick and wife, Maida, Robert Hambrick, Jr. and wife, Doris, Newton Hambrick, Carol Hambrick and wife, Sandy; sisters, Frankie Capers, Margaret Jordan and husband, Leroy; grandchildren, Kristin Martin and husband, Kenny, Dusty Moser, Monique Whitehead and husband, Ryan; great grandchildren, Garett, Landon, Gatlin, Faith, Braylan; and a host of other family and dear friends.

 

John spent his early years on a cotton field in Pennington. At five years old, his family moved to La Porte, where he grew up, played football for four years for La Porte High School, and graduated Class of ’59. John was in a band named, “John Hambrick and the Blue Embers”. He enjoyed playing guitar and writing his own songs. John served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1959 – 1961. Afterward, he moved to California and worked for Warner Brothers on movie sets. In 1963, he moved back to La Porte, working for a pipeline and taking welding classes. John married the love of his life, Marilyn on November 22, 1975. He worked for Hickam Industries then moved over to Revak as a welder, retiring in 2006. John was a member of the Baptist Church and strong in his faith. He was a wonderful Pawpaw to his grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him

 

A visitation for John will take place at La Porte Church of Christ, 704 S. Broadway, La Porte, Texas 77571, on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. A graveside service will begin at 2:00 pm at Grand View Memorial Park, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505.
