Obituary of Ronald James Dickey

Ronald James Dickey, 61, passed away December 15, 2018, with his wife and daughter by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Ron was born February 19, 1957 in Huntington Station, NY. He was the son of Harold and Helyn Dickey of McDonough, GA. Ron received his undergraduate degree from Brockport College in New York and a Master of Education from the University of Houston.

Ron’s passion for teaching led him to Texas where he worked as a teacher and coach in the Alief Independent School District for 19 years. Ron found his “work family” at River Oaks Baptist School where he has been teaching and coaching for the past 18 years. Ron was a role model and mentor to many students, inspiring and leading with a calm wisdom, a loving approach and just the right amount of humor. Ron had the gift of making everyone he came in contact with feel cared for and appreciated.

As much as Ron loved teaching, his first love was his family. He enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his wife and daughter, parents and siblings, as well as his extended family. The times they spent together were filled with lots of love and laughter.

In addition to his parents, Ron is survived by his wife of 34 years, Joanne, and their daughter, Taylor, a brother Harold (Denise) Dickey of Las Vegas, sister Karen (Elzee) Williams (Stockbridge, GA), as well as a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. 

The family would like to thank Dr. Nazir Tannir of MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Rex Marco of Houston Methodist Hospital, along with both their staffs for the care they provided during Ron’s fight with cancer. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to MD Anderson’s Palliative Care Team on 12NW for the compassionate and loving care they showed during Ron’s four week stay there. They made an especially difficult time a little easier, and the family is forever grateful to them.

A memorial service celebrating Ron’s life will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 at River Oaks Baptist Church, 2300 Willowick Rd., Houston, TX 77027, at 2:00 pm.
