Obituary of Zulema Vela Holman

Zulema Vela Holman, 82, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2019.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Ascension and Eva Vela; her loving husband, Richard Lewis Holman; son, Richard Oscar Gutierrez; and brothers, Ascension Vela Jr. and Ricardo Vela.  Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Veronica Ferguson and husband, Darrell, Kenya Hamilton and husband, Jack; sister, Alma Marnell; grandchildren, Krystal Hanegan and husband, Pete, Kirby Ferguson and fiancé, Chris, Ricky Gutierrez and wife, Krista, Amber Mari Gutierrez, Jacob Hamilton, and Eva Hamilton; great grandchildren, Tristan, Everett, Lyla, Jocelyn, and Ricky Jr.; and a host of other family and dear friends.

First and foremost, Zulema loved her family and would do anything for them.  She enjoyed cooking, baking, reading mystery novels and watching movies.  Zulema was especially known for her cakes, cookies and empanadas.  Her favorite authors included James Patterson, Danielle Steele, and Tom Clancy.  Zulema enjoyed all kinds of movies and had an extensive collection of DVDs.  She loved cross stitching, quilting and doing crafts with her grandkids and great grandkids.  Zulema was often seen wearing multiple brooches and flowers in her hair.  She was an active member of the booster club of Martin High School in Laredo, TX and always made sure to return for her class reunions.  Zulema took great pride in being not only an excellent friend and co-worker, but also a surrogate “Mom” to her co-workers’ children as they called in the afternoons to check in when they got home from school.  She had a caring soul and was always available to help those in need.  Zulema will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Services for Zulema will be held Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581.  The visitation will be from 1:00 until 3:00 pm with the funeral service following at 3:00 pm with Pastor Jon Salminen officiating.  Interment will take place Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 12:30 pm at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
