Dear Sangeeta, I am so sorry for your loss. My brain can’t process the sad news and cannot believe that this has happened. Your father’s contribution will always be the guiding force in so many lives. He will always be alive via his contribution to the science and his generosity.
I can’t forget the day he was so proud of my driving on 605 and 210 freeways. He believed and encouraged me when I was not sure on myself, that’s what makes him so special. Sending the love and a hug of strength to you and the entire family.

Satish and I met as I was being recruited to UTMB, in 1984. From that moment on, both Lynn and I were impressed by his friendly, open nature, his excellent research, and his advice. Our families had many lovely times together- in our homes, restaurants, Book Club, labs. Farewell, and our sympathetic thoughts to Rani and all the family.

I met Dr. Srivastava in Rae Bareli early in 1983 where I went to get interviewed for a postdoctoral position. Interview was sternly professional but ended with a pleasantries and a sweet from his wife who became our dear aunty. Before I left him he sort of strictly ordered me to come to Galveston with my wife because according to his own words “then I shall be able to give 100% attention to my work in the laboratory rather than spending time in dialing back to India to talk to her” (he knew pretty well how annoying and frustrating task it was to call India in those years). Going back to Lucknow after the interview I was thinking, is it going to be like this: a strictly professional demeanor, but a soft and amiable personal relationship? Well I got the offer and luckily the visa in the first attempt. I landed at the Houston airport with wife who was in advance stages of her pregnancy and completely confused. He must have thought that I asked this bloke to come with his wife only, but I suppose some words are better kept unspoken.
I spent better part of 5 years working in his laboratory. He would call me on weekends and holidays to join him in his office, the boat or RV to write papers and grants because he felt that he can be really productive in these situations and times. He cherished weekends to keep me busy this way without much thought. In all, we published more than 20 papers and about 50 abstracts. That was work.
When it was not work, he reveled in keeping close touch of a father figure in all aspects of our life. Both of my children were born and grew in his personal care and he became their favorite uncle. My wife who came in this country without any understanding of reading or writing English completely metamorphosed (also non-vegetarian) with his encouragement and support. Last October when we visited him he said to her that he is very proud of her. I think he really meant it and we will never forget that. We enjoyed an endless bout of his barbecue and Chevas Regal. We just needed some excuse. Again last October during our visit he in his frail health insisted on getting red snapper personally marinated for us. He always enjoyed in cooking and serving. For all practical purposes he considered us part of his big family. We have been full of gratitude for his love and care.
Sarla and I will miss our religiously annual telephone call to him on New Year to wish him Happy Birthday and updating with new developments in our life. We always cherished his advice. His memories will be ingrained in our being forever. Sarla and I know he is happy with all his achievements and the achievements of the people whom he loved and care. Amen.
