Sonya was my most memorable professor my first year at San Jac South, she was motivating and helped put my anxiety at ease. Some students in my class considered her a tough professor, I considered a great educator with truly reasonable expectations for her students. I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing, I wish more first year college students could experience being taught and guided by such an uplifting professor.

I really enjoyed working with Sonya over the past 5 years. She was a caring instructor who always went above and beyond for her students. She was a very hard working and loyal person. We worked closely with one another on the CASP conference down in Galveston a couple years back. I have lots of great memories of laughing with Sonya. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Much love to her family.

I knew Sonya when I worked at the San Jacinto South campus Admissions office. In addition to heading sessions with us on student placement, she would help out during peak registration. As I write this, I can vividly picture her sitting at the station next to me during that time in her white blouse. She was a great source of information and helped me better understand the process of placing students in the right courses. My heart breaks that she's no longer with us. I pray that the Lord will comfort and help her family, loved ones and friends find peace during this difficult time. Fare thee well Sonya. You will be dearly missed.

I met Sonya three years ago, and we served on the TADE Board together. It was a privilege to know her. She loved teaching and serving others, and she was always friendly and willing to listen or lend a hand. One of my fondest memories was when she picked up a group at the airport in Houston in the college van and transported us to Galveston for the CASP Conference. We had a fun trip to Galveston. The family is in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless!

This is a tough one for me because Sonya was not only a colleague but a friend and mentor to me. Working with her has always been a joy we could talk about almost anything and everything. I was always excited to see her in our office because she was always in such great spirits. We would talk about personal things and she would always tell me to take care of myself. I am currently in Grad School and she has definitely been a mentor to me even calling me on the phone threatening me with picking me up and taking me to the library with her. She always pushed me to do great things and not settle. She will truly be missed. Most of all I will miss her using my office when I am gone and leaving little notes behind and stopping by her office or hitting it really loud when I passed by to go get some food. My heart goes out to her family especially her mother, son, and sister. She will truly be missed wholeheartedly. Love you Sonya!!!!!

It was a June 2011, I stepped through the doors of San Jacinto College as a student, and this after 25 years of being out of school. You were the first professor I interacted with on campus. One day I stayed after class to ask a question because I didn’t want to ask in front of the class, you told me don’t be afraid to ask questions, because someone else may have the same question. Talking with you that day put me at ease and I survived the summer with a B in your class. You told me when we talked about the B that I had all the potential in the world to go far in college. When classes got hard (and they did) you motivated me to keep going until I completed my Associates and my Bachelor’s degree. I’ll never forget what you told me when I finished, you said “it wasn’t as hard as you though, was it”. You will be missed but you will never be forgotten because I now you touched all the lives of every student you came in contact with just like you touched my life.

I recall a very kind gesture Sonia willingly performed on my behalf. As a nurse educator, I had a teaching assignment one morning and as I was getting up to prepare and drop my two children off to their sitter, my sitter cancelled. I panicked and brought the kids to work with me as I prepared to tell my supervisor I would not be able to teach that day due to my sitter cancellation. I spoke with Shawna, Sonia's sister, who worked alongside me in the department. She immediately called Sonia and asked if she could watch the kids while I taught my class. Sonia immediately and without hesitation agreed! My children had the time of their lives and as adults now, I shared our loss of Sonia Prince and my son immediately recalled her kindness, and selflessness. In my mind, that's just who she was; a blessing!

Thy Word is a lamp onto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119:105
I only knew Ms. Sonya briefly. Her colleagues truly shed light on who Sonya really was as a person, co-worker, and instructor of San Jac students. I worked with Sonya’s sister Shawna, and every word shared about Sonya describes Shawna. A sweet spirit, and contagious smile, and a willingness to assist and work well with others.
Shawna, may the love and comfort of our Lord Jesus Christ be with Sonya’s son as this is a great loss to him. May God carry you and other family members through this time of grief. God’s timing is neither early nor late. He called her name, and Sonya responded willingly. Praise God!

The San Jacinto community was blessed to have Sonya. I had the opportunity to interact with Sonya during my time in the New Faculty Academy. She overflowed with warmth and patience as we became a part of this community. She empowered those around her while sharing her laughter in the process. She maintained standards while seeing the needs of the individual. Her impact goes well beyond College Prep. She has made each of her peers, from across all disciplines, better teachers. I briefly knew Sonya, but the time we were acquainted, I was very appreciative of her willingness to assist. It was my first opportunity in teaching a GUST course at San Jacinto. After hearing Sonya speak in a faculty training, I knew I wanted her to be my mentor. After asking her to be my mentor, she responded yes without any hesitation. She was patient, informative, and attentive. She wanted to make sure I was well supported. I thank God He allowed our paths to cross. I could not have taught my first GUST course without her support. Sonya was my colleague for 13 years. During that time, we laughed a lot and worked hard to make a way for at-risk students to have a meaningful learning experience. Sonya was dedicated to student success and to education as a way for students to realize a better life for themselves and their families. She and I worked on so many projects together, and she will be sorely missed. Our College Prep department has lost a valued friend and colleague, lost but never to be forgotten.
