Obituary of Jon J Meza

Please share a memory of Jon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that the family of Jon “JJ” Meza announces his passing on Tuesday, April 9th, 2019 at his home in La Porte, Texas.  He was surrounded by the comfort of his loved ones in his last days.

Born December 28th, 1928 in Baytown, Texas, to Reynaldo and Benedicta Meza, JJ has since made a lasting impact on friends, colleagues, and loved ones alike.  JJ made his parents proud with his athletic accomplishments in football.  In his early life, JJ spent his time gaining life experience and working towards the future.  In 1964 he married “the love of his life” Patsy Wells and his family continued to grow.  They enjoyed world travel, raising their children, and supporting the La Porte community in numerous ways.

Throughout his long and full life, JJ was a prominent figure all around La Porte, owning and managing numerous properties and businesses, serving on the La Porte tax reinvestment zone board, La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and most prominently, as Mayor from 1976-1982.  Notable service also includes, President of the Harris County Mayors and Council Association and time spent on the board of directors for both Bayshore National Bank and Bayport National Bank.  JJ also spent his spare time as a mentor for Boy Scouts of America and as coach and board member for Little League Baseball and Football Associations.  Included in his life work, JJ managed five ranches for the American Sportsman Club and received the Hispanic Pioneer award for Harris County.  Most recently, and just after his 90th birthday this year, Mayor Rigby declared January 14th “JJ Meza Day” in The City of La Porte.

If you knew JJ, you knew he always had a story to tell, poem to recite, or advice to give.  If you were fortunate enough, you might have heard some of his favorite insights on life.

Along with his wisdom us he leaves us with a multitude of loving family members.   He is preceded in death by his parents Reynaldo Meza and Benedicta Gonzalez, wife Patsy Meza, and daughter Kimberly Kannarr.  JJ is survived by children Wanda Sirmans, Melissa Shaw and husband Terry, Devona Rule, Bo Kannarr and wife Tammy, Darius Meza, and Jonelle Goodwin and husband Mark.  He also has 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren to carry on his legacy.
