Barbara Ann Hunt Davis
April 7, 1936 – December 25, 2019
Barbara “Granny” 83, left us to celebrate Mardi Gras with her husband of 54 years, Robert ‘Poppy Bobby’ Davis and her sister Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Mull Domec. For Barbara that is truly going Home. Barbara said recently,
“ I got the best of the Cajun culture, that is my people. Once you have met, then you get your hug and your handshake you were in for the rest of your life! You were family!”
She graduated from Behrman High School. After high school, she crossed the Manchac Swamp to attend Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond, La. There she met a New Orleans ‘city boy’, Bobby Davis and fell in love. She graduated in 1957 and they officially began their 51 year journey together. Barbara taught high school while Bobby finished his degree. Bob later got a job at IBM (I’ve Been Moved), which meant that each of their five children were born in a different city. It also meant that Barbara quit teaching to raise their five children.
She resumed her career and followed her passion when their youngest, Susan, went to school. By that time, they had established deep roots in the La Porte community. Barbara never lost her passion for teaching and continued to make a difference in children’s lives. She spent most of her second act between La Porte Elementary and Bayshore Elementary. She loved teaching reading and writing. It would not have surprised anyone who knew her, that upon entering her classroom you might find her on the floor reading books or up singing, dancing and being silly. She would do almost anything to make learning fun. Barbara believed, with all her heart no child comes to school to fail. She believed if you gave a child love and ‘captured their heart’, there was nothing that student could not achieve.
If ever invited to her home, you had a ‘glug’, a bite to eat and a story or two, or three. There was never a shortage of hugs, food or drink and true to what she learned growing up, once you were in …” you were family.”
She is beloved mother to four sons and a daughter, Mike and spouse Angela, Richard and spouse Shari, Mark and fiancé Evelyn, Pat and spouse Gail, and Susan and spouse Henry Puckett. Grandmother to Lauren, Cody, Ryan, Tyler, Erin, Zack, Beau, Jake, Liz, Johnathon, Kristal, Mallory, Courtney, and Ella Puckett. Great grandmother to Mila, Isaiah, Charlotte, Izzy and Amelia.
There will be a celebration of this amazing life for the family at 11:00AM Saturday January 4, 2020 at the Clayton Funeral home in La Porte. Please join the family at noon to celebrate, share some food and tell some tales at St. Mary’s Hall, St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, in La Porte.
