LaVerna Williams Sells, 96, departed this life to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, July 25, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jodie and Obelia Williams; husband, Eska C. Sells; brother, Dr. H. B. (Hayden) Williams; Sisters, Maye Jo Williams, Serlina Robinson, Pearl Lampkin, and Sandra Williams. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Lynn Ivan Sells and wife, Carolyn; daughters, Dr. Sheila Bernita Sells Belcher and husband, Carl, and Mona Maria Sells Tates and husband, Samuel; grandchildren, Carl II, Ryan, Daryl, Samuel II, Devon and Joshua; great grandchildren, Jade, Bailey, Jackson, Alexander, Madison, and two more on the way (Lucia and Olivia). She also leaves a sister-in law, Bernice Williams, and a host of other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.
LaVerna was born in Kemp, Texas on March 18, 1924. She was strong in her faith, accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at a young age. LaVerna grew up in Tyler, Texas on her family’s farm. She graduated from Prairie View A & M University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics. LaVerna taught for a brief time in Tyler before she married Eska and moved to Houston. To this union, of 53 years, they were blessed with their 3 children. After relocating to Houston, she had a successful 28-year career as a Medical Technician with Baylor Hospital and then Methodist Hospital in the Special Chemistry, Pathology Department. During this time, she obtained a degree in practical nursing. She also obtained her cosmetology license which allowed her to practice for several years before she retired from the hospital system. LaVerna was a longtime and faithful member of the Mount Hebron Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Order of The Eastern Star (Sisterhood Lodge). She enjoyed ceramics, painting, sewing, piano lessons, decorating, singing, dance aerobics and classical and gospel music. She will forever be remembered for her peaceful spirit, and the true joy she experienced spending time with her grandchildren and family. LaVerna will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services for LaVerna will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland Texas, 77581. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm with Bishop John A. Tates officiating and will also be streamed live. Interment will follow at Houston Memorial Garden Cemetery, in Pearland, Texas.
