Obituary of Albert Downey III
Please share a memory of Albert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Coach Albert Downey was a prodigy son born in New Orleans, LA to the late Naomi and Albert Downey Jr. He grew up with it instilled in his mind that he was and would be somebody to reckon with. When Albert got to H.S., his football talent was immensely recognizable. He made quite an impact on the school. (St. Augustine.) No one knew that he had a second love. Art fulfilled his empty spaces. There was nothing Albert could not duplicate devise or implement. He was extremely knowledgeable.
Upon graduation from H.S., he got an unexpected surprise visit from the head Coach at Grambling University. Coach Eddie Robinson had personally came down to retrieve him to attend Grambling. In the mist of his education, Albert was faced with a dilemma: He was both drafted pro and was told to attend the army. He ended up serving a few years and then returned to college to be even more awesome than before. He not only played college ball, but he coached it also. One of his conquests being the pro-ball player Doug Williams.
Albert was an avid Order of Brotherhood founder (OBB). This was a fraternity he initiated and started at Grambling.
After completing his master’s degree, Albert decided to fulfill another dream of his. His conquest took him to Houston, TX to teach many schools, but he ended up finding a stationary position at Stephen F. Austin HS as a teacher as well as a football and tennis coach. His tennis teams earned numerous district awards during his reign as coach. His career led him to many avenues. Coach Downey retired after numerous years in the Houston independent School District but was still active. He coached little league football for the dolphins before having to give it up. He endured a lot until the end. He was a very intellectual individual with the kindest heart and the most loving spirit and on top of it all he was a courageous fighter. Even when everyone said No, he heard yes and never gave up even in his last days. Even though he is not on this physical world, his spirit still roams this world within us and will be greatly missed.
Left to cherish Albert’s memory is his loving wife Brenda Downey; sons, Kevin Mitchell, Derrick Downey, Nicholas Downey and wife, Shamika; daughter, Angela Downey and her children; grandchildren, Aria, Dreshon, Deion, Desarae, Dantae, Donavan and a host of other family and friends.
