Obituary of Phil Goodpaster

Please share a memory of Phil to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Phil Goodpaster, 80, passed away September 10, 2020. He is preceded in death by his parents, Omar and Willamenia Goodpaster; and sister, Beverly Miller. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Esta Goodpaster; daughter, Ann Votaw and husband Roger; brother, Bob Goodpaster; grandson, Reid Votaw; nephew, Phillip Goodpaster and Sandra Fillon; cousin, Becky Kenney; and a host of other dear family and friends. Born in Kendallville, Indiana on November 8, 1939, Phil graduated from Wolcottville High School in 1957 in a graduating class of 13 students. In 2017 Phil attended the 60th reunion of his class with most of the class members in attendance. Phil and Ann moved to Houston, Texas, in the early 1970’s where he spent most of his career working in the accounting department with Weatherford/Oilfield Rental. Phil had many interests and hobbies throughout the years. He was an avid bike rider. The MS-150 to Austin was one of the rides he was most proud of. When he was no longer able to ride, he enjoyed sharing stories of his bike travels. Phil was first enrolled in the Cradle Roll class at the Methodist Church when he was 8 days old. Thereafter, he missed very few Sundays not being in Sunday School and church. He found pride in serving with the “Men in Action” at First United Methodist Church in Pearland, Texas, and looked forward to the annual men’s retreat. He was a member of the church choir, and faithfully attended the men’s Bible Study Group for many years. In his later years, still wanting to serve and reach out to others, he collected teddy bears to contribute to the church’s bear ministry. Throughout his adult life, Phil was a faithful Blood Center donor, giving well over 10 gallons. Had they not stopped giving mugs to donors, he would have had received a vast collection! Another longtime hobby of Phil’s was photography. He loved taking photos during his travels, however Phil is seldom seen in his pictures. Utilizing his love of photography, Phil filmed wedding videos for several years on a part-time basis. Phil also loved to country and western dance, which lead to square dancing, where he and Esta met. Phil’s favorite saying was “We’ll just go with what we got” and that is what he would want us to do! Phil will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Services for Phil will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, Texas 77581. The visitation will be held from 10:30 until 11:30 am with the funeral service following beginning at 11:30 am with rev. Dr. Keith Whitaker and Pastor Reggie Clemons officiating.
