I just found out about Junior. Jose told me while eating at Emma’s. My wife and I were shocked and heart broken. He was such a good man and truly loved his customers. Owning several businesses over the years, I know how much the family misses him at the restaurant. My sincere condolences.

I was so sad to hear the news of Jose passing. I loved popping in the restaurant and being met by his contagious grin! My mom posted earlier that we were neighbors and our dog would get out and end up in their pool and he would bring her back home. We also loved joking with him at Emma's about the Strake/St. Thomas rivalry. He always greeted us like family and we loved bringing friends into meet him. Prayers of comfort and peace for his wife and family.

Jose was a wonderful and kind young man. Very sorry to hear of his passing. For many years we have enjoyed our visits to Mely’s/Emma’s and our conversations with Jose. He was a delight to engage with and Tequila was a topic he knew very well and would tell us amazing things about it. And Golf, of which we had in common, he was always entertaining. We were fortunate to know him, will miss him and may he Rest In Peace with our Lord.

Jose was a true gentleman and one of the nicest people I ever met. Even though it seems like forever ago (I met him in college so bare with me.) I was devastated to hear the sad news about Jose. I am Steffani Polasek’s mom - Steff, John, and boys are neighbors and I lived with them for a long time!! Some of best memories are at the restaurant visiting with Jose who always greeted us and took time to share stories and visit! He was a wonderful man and will he missed by all. But my favorite thing about Jose is that when the Polasek dog- Roxie would escape to roam the neighborhood- Jose would save the day by ringing the doorbell with Roxie at his side- and a big smile on his face!!! And of course we would always have a chat about whatever was going on!! He was one of a kind - who brought sunshine wherever he went!!! What a great loss to the community and the world !!! I am devastated by this news. We just found out tonight or would certainly have made this mornings ceremony.
I met Jose 8 years ago...we were a Strake Jesuit family planning a get together of new SJ and STH moms. As a proud ST Eagle he showed us some love and harassment. We loved it and him.
My family frequents Emma’s regularly. We were at Emma’s this past Saturday night. As usual, we were delighted to see Jose. He and my husband share a love of tequila...we had a wonderful conversation with Jose. He shared with us the news of his recent wedding. We were thrilled for him. He pulled out his phone to show us pictures of the event. He was so proud of and in love with his bride. He showed pictures of his STH friends who joined them for there wedding...he loved them all.
We will miss him dearly. He was a good man who made a difference in people’s lives. God has gained a good one.

When I first arrived at St. Thomas back in 2002, Jose was about as kind a kid as I met. In truth, he was exactly the type of student I hoped to meet -friendly, willing, industrious, and lighthearted. Even if I couldn't always count on him to pay attention or have his homework done, I could always count on him to be in on whatever joke was being played.
He would even smile in class from time to time, and that's saying something. I was a bit of a tyrant that first year, yet he seemed to take it in stride. Simply put, he was kind and sincere. He was genuine. What you saw was what you got. Eventually I would teach his younger brothers and discover his kindness was actually a family trait.
When I moved to Pearland in 2013, the Mendieta family restaurant was one of the first places I took my wife. And if Jose was working when I came in, he always made sure to stop and check on our table. Invariably, we would reminisce, talk about his brothers, laugh about the other members of his class (Niko Alejo-Page, Pedro Benitez, Jason M. Gallardo, etc.), celebrating this marriage, lamenting someone else's difficult choices, etc. Sooner or later I would drink some tequilla at his request and often my bill would be cut in half (retroactively earning him A's on every paper he ever turned in to me).
Anyway, my prayers and thoughts are with his bride, his brothers, and his family.
I will light a candle for Jose, and I will keep all of you in my prayers.
