Obituary of Lois Juanita Jones
Please share a memory of Lois to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
God called another angel home, Lois Juanita Hazell Jones, on December 5, 2020.
Lois Juanita Hazell Jones was born in 1916 in Kansas as the second oldest of 18 children and spent much of her youth caring for her siblings. Her dad was a railroad station agent and they lived in at least 10 different cities during her childhood, including one site where the family home was a railroad boxcar.
Lois entered the workforce in her last year of high school and worked until she was in her 80’s. For one job, she walked to a neighboring town and spent the night sleeping on a park bench so she could interview for the job early the next morning. At various times, she was a live-in caretaker, cook, and cleaning lady, a one-room schoolmarm, canning factory line worker, laundress, grocery store cashier, department store clerk, bus depot ticket agent, receptionist, secretary, bookkeeper, lumber yard wood grader, gift store clerk, and an award-winning insurance agent.
An accomplished seamstress, Lois often tailored her own clothes. She had a craft store booth for many years and sold her handmade Raggedy Ann and Andy’s, stuffed animals, pillows, embroidered items, and more. Her prized possession was her collection of over 100 dolls. Lois loved reading her Bible and listening to gospel music. Her green thumb ensured that she always had plants all around the house. Although she was a world traveler, having visited Mexico, Belgium, France, Germany, Azerbaijan, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, perhaps her favorite trip was to the New England States to see the Fall leaves.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mary Lavina Hazell; her brothers Vernon, Donald, Dwight, Alva, Edward, Ian, and Thornton; her sisters Pauline Moran, Betty Stewart, Evelyn Head, Philis Hazell, Dee King, and Sylvia Edens; her husband’s Orlan Crockett Coleman and George Albert (Thomas) Jones; and her daughters Neita Lois Jones and Ruth Jackson Blake.
She is survived by her daughters Sharon (Daniel) Coleman Hazell-Alvarez and Helene (Curtis Johnson) Jones Blake, grandchildren Tanya Orozco, Dominic Hazell, Chris Hazell, Roger Dobbs, Richard Ray, C W Griffiths, Jeffrey and Gregory Johnson, and other grandchildren by adoption. She is also survived by four sisters -- Iva Arndt, Jean Parker, Mary Ward and Dottie Carlson Umphries – and more than 60 nieces and nephews, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Lois was spunky, funny, and loved being around people. Although little in stature, she was fierce in her love for family and friends. She will live on in the stories and memories of those whom she touched during her almost 104 years.
Due to pandemic concerns, no service will be held at this time. A memorial service is planned for later.
