Obituary of Robert Jewel Gray

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Jewel Gray, better known as Bob to his friends and family, gained his spiritual wings Sunday August 8th, 2021, at the age of 85. Bob’s life began in a small town in Arkansas on January 3rd, 1936. His parents were Robert and Geneva Gray, and he had an older sister Joyce. The family moved to Houston for work as Bob’s father was a carpenter and Houston was booming with new construction then. The family settled near downtown Houston in an area called Pecan Park south. Bob graduated from Milby High School in Houston, Texas and was very active as teen at the local Baptist Church. He became a Christian at a young age of his life. Soon after high school Bob was drafted into the United States Army and was transferred to Germany for 2 years and then back the United States for an additional 2 years with the Army Reserve. He left the Army as a Corporal. Bob began his career as a Police Officer with the City of Houston Police Department in 1962. He started as a Patrol Officer and retired from the City of Houston as a Sargent in 1989 with 27 years of service. He was a mentor to new rookie Police Officers and took the position of a Field Training Officer even when he was not given that title from the Department. He always wanted new officers to know the lay of land and he provided good direction for many new officers. Once Bob retired from the Police Department in 1989, he moved to Sacul, Texas and began retirement with wife Patti Gray. They were together until her death in 2014. Bob never really retired as he took on several jobs in the community as the groundskeeper for the Sacul and McKnight Cemetery’s. He was also the technician for the Sacul Water District, and we all know the water was at is purist when he was in charge. Bob was even asked by a local Commissioner to be a Police Officer again for the area, but he refused as he always said “I left the Police work in Houston.” Bob really enjoyed retirement and found great fun in attending the local fish fries at the 7th Street Grill in Cushing, Texas and at Lake Stryker. He assisted his neighbors with needed repairs or just mowed their yard because he thought it needed it. Bob leaves behind his son, Robert Craig Gray, wife Lisa Gray, grandchildren Kyle Gray and Kasey Gray. Daughter DeAnn and husband Darron Crump, son Raney Gibbs, granddaughter Shelby and husband Tye Thompson and a great granddaughter Audrey. Niece Zena Dale Fisher and daughters Cortney Fischer and Candance Arizpe. His loyal canine companion Taz. Bob also had very close friends in Sacul that he spent his retirement years with that hold a very special place in his heart, these friends are Effie Rogers, Cecil and Cindy Petty and Tommy King. Memorial Service will be held on August 21, 2021, at the New Faith Church located at 206 Lucas St. Sacul, TX 75788. Family and Friends will gather beginning at 1:00PM with services starting promptly 1:30PM. Graveside immediately following the Memorial Service at the Sacul Cemetery.
