Obituary of Helen Marie Bowen
Please share a memory of Helen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Helen Marie Bowen, 84, passed away Friday, February 18, 2022, one day before her 85th birthday. She is preceded in death by her parents Julius and Irene Martin. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Larry Bowen; daughters Nancy Granstrom (Gene Brewer), Susan Collins (Bruce); brother Louis James Martin; sisters Cornelia “Connie” Stone (Bill), Judy Armstrong (Dennis), Irene Pullen (Randy); grandchildren Jacob, Brendon, Coral, and a host of other dear family and friends.
Helen was born and raised in southern Louisiana. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from what is now the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. She was a retired teacher and also an Executive Secretary at Kettle Restaurants until they went out of business. Helen finished her career working as a secretary to the NASA astronauts at USA Space Alliance.
Helen met the love of her life, Larry Bowen, not long after she moved to Texas. They met at Country Club Place Country Club where they were playing golf. They were married for 37 wonderfully happy years.
Helen loved working out both at home and at the gym. She was an avid golfer and she loved sporty cars. Helen also loved to dance, tell funny jokes, go bowling (she was on a bowling team at Armadillo Lanes), and shopping, especially for shoes! She loved singing in the choir and going to Sunday School at First United Methodist Church in Pearland. Helen was blessed to have met and become best friends with two very special ladies at her church. They called themselves the “Small Gang Friends”. Almost every week they went out to lunch and shopping together. These friendships became especially important to Helen when she became legally blind due to Macular Degeneration and could no longer drive. Helen also enjoyed going for walks with their pet dog, Teddy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services for Helen will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, Pearland. Visitation is scheduled from 10:00 – 11:00 am. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 am, with pastor Reggie Clemons officiating. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.claytonfuneralhomes.com
