Following his service in the Army, Juan joined the United States Navy and served for two more years. He was a three-time purple heart recipient and was extremely proud of his service to his country.

He started a homeschool program for troubled and disadvantaged children so they could complete their education. Juan also felt it was important to help some adults complete their GED’s to improve their lives. Throughout his entire career, whether in the armed forces or teaching, Juan was dedicated to serving others. He also had a great historical interest in the San Isidro Cemetery located in Sugarland, Texas and served as a volunteer, board member, and consultant for many years.
