Obituary of Surinder Kumar Goel
Surinder Kumar Goel, 74, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 4. 2022 at home surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his father Beni Parshad Goel; and mother Kala V. Aggarwal Goel. Left to cherish Surinder’s memory are his loving wife, of 42 years, Usha Goel; son Ankush Goel; daughter Dr. Sara Goel and her husband, Dr. Siddharth Aranke; his brothers Dr. Sunder Lal Goel, Mohinder Goel, Rakesh Goel; sisters Dr. Parkash V. Goel, Kailash Goel, Usha Gupta, Neena Garg; grandchildren Shivani and Sohan Aranke, and a host of many other family and friends.
Surinder was born on March 3, 1948 in Jagadhri Haryana, and finished his schooling in Yamumanagar. From there he travelled to Delhi to complete his pre-Engineering schooling before getting his Engineering degree in Calicut.
Surinder then came to the United States in 1976, to attend the Wright State University where he earned a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and graduated at the top of his class. He worked as a computer engineer at NASA and was a manager of Mission Control during the Challenger Mission. On a short visit to his family in 1979, he met a young woman, Usha, a meeting arranged by both families that resulted in 42 years of a beautiful marriage with happy and fulfilling memories.
On their first date at his friend’s movie theatre, the showing was booked so his friend had to pull in one chair and Surinder gave the seat to Usha which required him to spend most of the time outside of the theatre so she could enjoy the show.
His siblings will always remember his affection and kindness, how he exceled at school without trying, and his incredible sense of humor, that once resulted in borrowing his brother’s car in his teenage years without asking to explore driving without a license.
He was a very loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family and was a wonderful provider for them.
Surinder was also an excellent swimmer, and loved pizza, watching Hindi movies, and oh how he loved to dance and was always the life of the party. He was affectionately known to his grandchildren as “Nannu” and giving out gummi bears was his signature gift. Surinder will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
