Dennis was born on August 22, 1945, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dennis started playing golf at a young age and excelled from the start. After graduating from St. Augustine High School, he went on to study Biology on a golf scholarship at Dillard University in New Orleans. He was a standout golfer becoming the first African American to earn NAIA All-American honors. He captured All-American honors in his freshman and sophomore years as well. After graduating with a degree in Biology from Dillard University, he joined the Air Force as a combat medic, kickstarting a 21-year career in the military. He continued to play competitive golf throughout his career. Dennis set a course record of 65 at the Pontchartrain Golf Course, later renamed the Joseph M. Bartholomew Municipal Golf Course in New Orleans. He played on an all-African American golf professional tour in 1968 and 1969 with pro-golfers Calvin Peete, Pete Brown, and Charlie Sifford. Dennis was recently inducted into Dillard University’s Sports Hall of Fame for golf. In his spare time, Dennis loved watching golf on television, telling jokes, and spending time with his friends and caretakers at Oasis of Pearland. During his lifetime, his golf skills were shared with many people via lessons, especially with his grandson, Larry. Dennis will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
