Professor Norwood, you have devoted your life and time to many people, projects, and endeavors until your last breath. I remember taking your courses Materials & Methods I and II; you were very informative, knowledgeable, and passionate about the course and made sure your students didn't leave your class until everyone was on the same note. You gave me the opportunity to travel to UAE, Dubai with you and a few other students from the CSI Organization. That was my first time traveling outside the country and even flying on a plane. You helped me in anyway possible to excel within the Construction Science program and went above and beyond for other students, colleagues, and for PVAMU as a whole. You will truly be missed and I appreciate every effort and sacrifice you made in this world. Your legacy shall continue to live on through your family and friends. Rest Well

In Memory of Professor Barry Norwood – By Dean Ikhlas Sabouni
Yesterday morning I was meeting with the new School of Architecture students. I thought about Professor Norwood who would be standing in the back making sure all the students were in the auditorium to find out information about the new academic year…..but he was not there. He is in a better place.
That moment reminded me of all the recruiting activities that he and I attended at high schools and community colleges. He was always ready with all the posters, brochures, and table covers, with a giant smile on his face. Especially after he had already eaten the food provided on these college nights.
We brought talented students who became very successful professionals in architecture and construction science who are leading firms and making their mark in their communities. He will live on in their memories and in the work they produce.
The study abroad program started with Barry sending me a few students to convince me to support them in their travel to Rome, Italy. That was the first trip abroad. His most memorable trip with his students was to Dubai. Although he is no longer with us in person, the program pushes forward, and our students just returned to Rome.
In other memories of his travels with students, he drove them to Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde every Spring for a 10-day trip. They studied the Anasazi Indian ruins and always ended the trip fishing for rainbow trout in freezing cold rivers.
Barry also took students to state and national Lego design competitions, beating out the major league schools. He also led our students to multiple victories at the AIA Sandcastle competition.
He mentored many young students and helped them achieve their goals of becoming architects. Under his supervision, his students worked on community service and historical preservation projects.
Barry Norwood will always be remembered for the legacy he left through his students. His compassion, diligence, and care he had for each student will forever be remembered.
God bless his soul and provide peace for his family and loved ones.

I am forever grateful to Berry for creating such a strong, nurturing architecture studio environment. After transferring to PV from a PWI, this was the first time I felt like I was fully supported by a professor. He took the time to nurture my talents instead of passing me up like the professors did at my other university. His mentorship and guidance laid the foundation for the successful architect I am today. I got my license in 2011 and now I'm Senior Principal and Design Principal for HOK where I am one of the 4 partners leading out LA Studio. I also sit on the firm's Board of Directors and Design Board. In addition to that, I was named Building Design + Construction's 40 Under 40 in 2021 and one of Los Angles Business Journal's Women of Influence: Construction, Architecture, and Engineering in 2022 and 2023! I still remember him drilling into our heads the importance of getting licensed. His passion for architecture was strong and only matched by his passion for his students. I will miss him terribly. Sending my condolences to his family.
Sincerely,
Adaeze Cadet

Professor Noorwood Was an exceptional Teacher. His tough love methodology worked wonder on me as a student. Exactly the push i needed when i was struggling. He always looked out for me and getting me internships or pushing me to take part in competitions or taking me with him to unique leadership events. As an international student, he really helped me explain the American professional way of bieng. I attribute my success of hospitality planning to him. As i took his studio in my final year. God bless his soul as we will miss him dearly

Barry always had a smile when meeting people. He was kind and helpful to his campus friends and co-workers. The word "no" was never in his vocabulary. He was willing to lend a helping hand whenever someone on campus needed it.
He will be missed by so many people at Prairie View A&M University.

Professor Norwood was such a sweet man. I remember taking a 13 day trip with him and a few other classmates to the 4 corners. This was my first time getting to know him better and he was so much fun. I remember all of us in the van listening to music on the road. He was a great man and he will be sorely missed.

I am a friend of Barry’s sister Sharry. Although it’s been years since Sharry and I worked together, I remember her speaking of Barry often and felt like he was “ bigger than life” and loved by his sister and family. She always spoke to her daughters about their Uncle Barry. It seems that I remember her oldest lived with her uncle and maybe attended college. My love to Sharry and the girls and all the family during this hard time.
