My dear brother will be greatly missed.
Despite living overseas for the past 40 years, we could connect over the phone as if we seen each other, the day before.
He taught me to change the oil in my car, what a funnel cloud is and (begrudgingly on my part) to love Country Music. He loved Hank, Billie Jo Spears and The Oak Ridge Boys, to name a few.
Though he had the good ol’ boy persona, he was an extremely intelligent man.
He was funny-very funny. Once, when he thought I was acting too “uppity”, he took a garden hose and sprayed me with it. He taught me to get off my high horse.
My biggest regret is not being there for him in the end.
An exceptional man, is now an exceptional angel.

To Lizzy, Ricky, Jimmy, Christina, and rest of the Nieber family please accept our deepest condolences. I met your dad over 36 years ago when I started at NASA/JSC and we have been friends ever since and he was like a second father to me over the years. We would talk at least two times a week over the last five years. I want ya’ll to know that he loved every one of you and so proud too. When I would stop by to check on him from time to time he would tell me how proud of ya’ll he was and your accomplishments.
It really hurt him how the lock shop treated him in his last years at NASA after years of building the shop up to be a real respected lock shop. He took pride in fixing things there, save NASA thousands of dollars over the years, and not fixed anything anymore only to replace.
We had a good time in the shop, I learn a lot from your dad, and I will miss talking with him.

I got to know Richard over 40 years ago when I came to work at JSC. Both being from New York State, we bonded. Over the years, we ate lunch together, shared stories, jokes, and got serious occasionally talking about raising kids in a crazy world.
Richard loved his family, his children, and his job. How may people can say that? Every position he held he took pride and great satisfaction in coming in early, working hard, and eagerly anticipating the next day. when I was Facility manager for B.30A, we crossed paths all the time because he was the JSC locksmith. He MADE time for a visit after the job was done and never had a bad day.
Like many of the best people in my life, Richard was not always treated kindly at JSC, and that broke his heart. This was his second family. I too, have suffered that, and that just deepened our bond.
I owe Richard a debt of gratitude for connecting me with T. Wayne Harris, the lawyer that handled my divorce for over a year. Richard thought the WORLD of T. Wayne and he was right!! Thank you Richard!!
My only regret is I did not know of his illness - he chose not to share that the last time we spoke earlier this year. I would have liked to say "good-bye!" and I will see you in heaven! God Bless, Richard!!!!
