Obituary of Gloria Ann Mills
Gloria Ann Heard Mills, 86, of Pearland, Texas, passed away on November 4, 2023, in her home surrounded by her loving family. Gloria was a compassionate and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who was a pillar of strength in her community.
Gloria was born in Bangor, Pennsylvania in 1937 to Leroy “Chummy” Heard and Arline Saunt Freeman. Gloria attended school in Bangor until the calling to care for others led her to nursing school at Allentown School of Nursing where she earned her Registered Nursing degree. She later moved to Boulder, Colorado, where she met her Husband of 63 years, Kenneth Mills. They were married on December 29, 1959. After marrying, Gloria and Ken started their family, moving to Jacksonville, Florida, then finally settling in Pearland, Texas where they raised their 5 children.
Gloria’s career was remarkable, touching the lives of countless individuals. She was extremely proud of her career as a labor and delivery nurse at Memorial Southeast Hospital where she served for 8 years. Her compassionate heart led her to a second career as a school nurse for Pearland Jr. High for 30 years. Gloria’s love for her students and fellow staff was boundless, creating an environment of love and support.
Gloria not only had an impressive career, she was a devoted and nurturing friend with many hobbies. She was an integral part of a close-knit group of friends who affectionately called themselves the “Dirty Dozen”. She was an active volunteer for Christian Helping Hands for many years, often evoking the help of her grandchildren, and was a cherished member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. She was an essential member of the church's Prayer Shawl Ministry, spending countless hours crocheting prayer shawls for fellow congregants and friends, offering them solace in times of need. She was also involved with Vacation Bible School, Alter Guild, Meals on Wheels, and taking blood pressure readings.
Gloria is survived by her devoted husband Ken Mills and her five children; son's David Mills and wife Davelynn, Doug Mills and wife Cheryl, Donald Mills, Dennis Mills and his wife Amy, and daughter Valerie Mills Freeman and husband Bradley.
Also known as Grammie or Gram, Gloria was a proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 8-3/4 great-grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
A celebration of her life will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 11, 2023, and family and friends are invited to come together to honor the beautiful soul who brought love and care to so many.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Christian Helping Hands, Inc by check to PO Box 34, Pearland, TX 77588-00341 or online at www.christianhelpinghands.org.
