I've told this story many times, but here goes one more time. I grew up in Mabank, Texas, just as Tom B. did. He was a little older than I, but I knew him, his parents, his sister, his aunt and uncle, all. We bought our groceries and dry goods from the store his parents and uncle and aunt owned, and where Tom B. worked at times, and later, when my parents opened a grocery and market across the street, we were friendly rivals, often borrowing items from each other when a customer wanted something one of us was out of. His mother was my Sunday School teacher when I was a little girl and told us about when his dad was a POW in World War II.
However, my story concerns a summer in the 1950's, when my daddy was still a full-time farmer and was doing hay baling for the public. He had built a skid to pull behind his square-bale baler, and Tom B. rode the skid and stacked the bales as they came out of the baler. Every so often, Daddy would stop and they would slide the stacks of bales off, and the haul truck picked them up and took them to the barn. One day, in a big hay meadow, Daddy unknowingly ran the baler over a bumble bee nest in the ground, and about the time the skid ran over it, bees boiled out. Daddy said he looked back just in time to see Tom B., running at full speed, over the hill, as he jumped in a tank!

Dear Margo and family,
I was extremely lucky to meet Tom in 2019 when I joined the Alexander Hodge Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Sugar Land. He was an exceedingly dedicated registrar who went above and beyond to assist applicants in documenting their Revolutionary War Ancestors. He's a legend in the SAR for the many new members he helped join the organization.

As Margo's close cousin, I came to know Tom pretty well. What stands out now most strongly is his great sense of humor. Every time we'd meet he had another story to tell, which he narrated with great zest, followed by his own burst of jolly laughter.
One that I've retold many times, including to my classes while teaching, is about two fellows, Rastace and Eustace. They were good friends who grew up together and graduated from high school. On that occasion, Rastace says to Eustace, "What you gonna do now, Eustace?"
Eustace replies, "Ya know, I really like this education thing. I'm gonna get more of it."
They go their ways and meet several years later. "Hey, Eustace, what you been doin'?"
"I got more education, Rastace."
"Yeah, what'd you get?
"I got a BS," Eustace replied.
"What's that mean?"
"Well, some say it means 'Bull Shit'"
Rastace continued, "And what you gonna do now?"
"You know, I really like this education thing and I'm gonna get more of it."
A few years later they meet again.
Rastace says: "Hey, Eustace, how you been? Did you get more of that education?"
"Yeah, Eustace, I got me a MS."
"What's that mean?"
"More of the same."
"And what you gonna do now?"
"I really like this education, so I'm gonna get more of it."
Another few years pass and they meet.
Rastace asks: "Hey, Eustace, good to see you. Did you get more of that education?"
"Sure did."
"What'd you get this time?"
"I got me a PHD."
"A PHD? What's that mean?"
"Piled high and deep!"
I can still hear Tom laughing as I retell it now. I wonder if he might be sharing other stories with those he's joined. How I'd love to listen in!

Tom is held in our hearts as a true friend.
Tom exemplifies and has been recognized as a great leader and promoter of our Sons of the Republic of Texas, Knight Commander of The Order of San Jacinto, the Honoree of the George Washington Distinguished Service Award of the Paul Carrington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and The General Society of the War of 1812, and Tom’s other great Historical, Educational and Patriotic societies.
Tom inspires us with his uplifting Christian family life, as a US Navy Officer Patriot Defender of our country and his enthusiastic tireless commitment as a historian and educator to children and adults about the history of The Republic of Texas, State of Texas and the United States with his extraordinary flag collection, outstanding positive attitude and sense of humor.
Tom is a great role model to many and me offering his friendship, experience, counsel and leadership.
With Prayers, Faith, Hope and Love for Tom, Margo and family,
Rose Marie and Joe R Davidson

Tom has been my brother-in-law since I was about 11 years old. He will be dearly missed. When he married my sister, he immediately adopted our family. He was part of every family gathering, always telling jokes and stories. My favorite one was when he procured a chicken from the neighbor so he could enter it in the State Fair in Dallas.
One of Tom's gifts was teaching school kids about the Flags of Texas and history in general. He was a true patriot and loved "talking" history.
Above all of that, Tom and Margo have always been there for my kids and myself through life's ups and downs, and that will never be forgotten.
Until we meet again, Tom. We love you and will always miss you!
Jenny
