Obituary of Janet Shipp Graves
Janet Shipp Graves, 90, a long-time resident of La Porte, Texas, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Janet is preceded in death by her husband Claude Abert Graves, brother Steve Shipp, sister Eugenia Shipp, and son Russell Lee Graves. She is survived by her brother Lucius Shipp, son James Graves (Lory), daughter Cathy Unger (David), grandchildren Cynthia Richard (Evan), Kevin Unger (Emily), and a host of many other family and friends.
Janet was born in Beeville, Texas, and raised in Iraan, Texas. She graduated from Erskine College in Due West, SC, with a bachelor’s degree. She delighted in her years of teaching for the La Porte School District. Janet enjoyed being an officer in the Garden Club. She was also the Secretary/Treasurer for the Greater Houston Model A Club, for many years and enjoyed many club outings. Janet was particularly fond of the “Pate Swap Meet”, She even drove herself to this swap meet, held in Ft. Worth, in the Spring of 2023! In fact, Janet was independent and still driving at the age of 90!
Janet loved gardening, bird watching and traveling. She traveled all over the world throughout her life. Some of the places she went on missionary trips to included Africa, and Bolivia in South America. Above all else, Janet adored spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Janet will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Janet’s family will be hosting Funeral Services for her at Clayton Funeral Home of La Porte on Friday, September 27, 2024. Visitation will run from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, with the Services commencing at 12:30 pm. Interment will follow the services at Grandview Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas.
