Obituary of Sheridan Lewis
Sheridan Ann Lewis was born on April 16, 1945, to the late Mr. Sylvester Dave Marks and Mrs. Dorothy Joe Marks in Jeanerette, Louisiana, Iberia Parish. In 1963, Sheridan graduated as salutatorian from Emma G. Wallace High School in Orange, TX, where she served as vice president of the National Honor Society, president of the Social Studies Club, member of the Student Council, member of the Monitor System, and typist on the “Dragon Fire Staff.”
Sheridan was introduced to her “Love,” Clarence J. Lewis Sr. from Beaumont, TX, by her best friend “Chine.” Mr. & Mrs. Clarence J. Lewis Sr. joined in Holy Wedlock on November 5, 1966, at 7:30 PM at Saint Teresa’s Catholic Church in Orange, TX.
In union for over five decades, together they raised a blended family of six children: four girls and two boys. Additionally, they raised one niece as their own with the same love for all their children. Their family grew to twelve grandchildren, more than forty-three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Sheridan was passionate about nursing, remaining current in her nursing certification through retirement, then caring for her late husband until the day he was granted his wings. A nurse for more than four decades, LVN, RN, receiving her BSN from UTMB-Galveston at age fifty in 1995, she served in ER, OR, as Charge Nurse, and several other roles. She retired from Columbia Bayshore and went on to work at Doctors Outpatient. Most importantly, she always used her knowledge and skills to serve her family and community. She was an alumna of San Jacinto College Central, Pasadena, Texas, where she also spent time as an adjunct professor.
She enjoyed watching and attending sporting events, reading, playing solitaire, and being present. She was an effective listener and voice of reason. Even in her later years, she remained active in the church and community. She was active with water aerobics three times a week and activities with the La Porte Seniors group. She was a great communicator, organizing monthly gatherings with her “Breakfast Club,” a sisterhood of nurses who had worked and emerged together, celebrating with them a few days before her passing.
She experienced her last overseas trip with her brother, sister-in-law, and their family in the Philippines over Christmas (2024) and New Year's (2025). She made her way to Atlanta to celebrate with family at another brother’s surprise birthday party she was adamant about attending and was planning to attend an Alaskan cruise in September with St. Mary’s parishioners.
Sheridan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and children Jessica A. Marks, Tracy A. Marks, and Joyce A. Marks; siblings Barrama Arline, Sylvester Marks Sr., Glenda Smith, and Donna Hardy. She is survived by her children Priscilla Lewis, Clarence Lewis, and William Lewis (Gianni); siblings Dr. Lilton Marks Sr. (Caroline), Tommy Marks (Truly), George Marks Sr. (Betty), and Winda Marks (Myra); grandchildren Shirley Lewis (Calvin), Wilma Lewis, Barbara Lewis, Billy Lewis, Tiffany Lewis, Michelle Lewis, Jeremy Howard, Ebonie Lewis-Greene, Shanice Alston, Devan Lewis, Johnathan Lewis, and Adonis Lewis; forty-three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Sheridan had an enduring love for her family and faith, often discussing it proudly. One of her colleagues shared with the family Sheridan’s daily password to life, "TTSP" - This Too Shall Pass.
