Carrie Ellen Olson, 78, passed away on August 17, 2011. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Oma Hargrove; her husbands, Dick Miller and Dr. John V. Olson; son Dick Hearn; siblings, Waltereed Hargrove, Johnnie Vivian Cloud, Omagene Hargrove, and Dorothy Butterfras. Carrie is survived by her daughters, Cindy Hearn Rackley and her husband, Russell, and Charlotte Reid and her husband, Tony; brothers, Harold Hargrove and his wife, Sylvia, Jacko Hargrove and his wife, Helena, Jesse Hargrove and his wife, Sammye; sister, LuAnn Campbell and her husband, Ron; grandchildren Charles Reid and his wife, Kim, Joel Reid and his wife, Nathania, Lucas Rackley, and Amber Rackley; great grandson, Judah Reid; and a host of many other family and friends.
Carrie graduated from Nacogdoches High School at the age of 16, after attending Bay City High School. She attended Stephen F. Austin University before settling in Houston. She began her career at Conoco Oil, then worked for The University of Texas Dental Branch and later, The University of Texas Health Science Center. She retired from The University of Texas after 30 years during which she held positions of Registrar and Director of Student Affairs. Carrie loved her work at the Dental School and made many life-long friends and memories. She enjoyed travelling, spending time with family, playing bridge and dropping a few quarters in the video poker machine. She travelled throughout the United States with a core group of family and friends, enjoying trips to California, Las Vegas, Yosemite, Kansas, Florida, Washington DC and all points in between. Carrie also travelled overseas to vacation and spend time with her daughter’s family. Her home was a gathering place for many holiday celebrations which often included upwards of 40 people. Carrie and her family stayed in touch weekly, sharing meals, birthdays and other fun celebrations. Any get-together was an excuse for lively talk and laughter. After moving to Country Place in Pearland, she made good friends and neighbors and played many winning hands of Bridge and Tripoley. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend and will leave behind a treasure of wonderful memories.
A visitation for Carrie will be held on Saturday, August 20 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Clayton Funeral Home, 5530 W. Broadway, Pearland, TX 77581. The Funeral Service will follow beginning at 12:00 pm. For those desiring memorials, please donate to the charity of your choice in Carrie’s honor.
