Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles C. “Charlie” Hoffman, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in Friendswood at the age of 83 years. A former resident of Park City, Utah, Charlie was born July 19, 1924 in Newcastle, Indiana. His mother, Edna, raised him and his two brothers until Charlie left home to work as a teenager. He first worked on the railroads, hand-firing a coal powered steam locomotive. Charlie then entered the Navy, telling the Navy he was born in 1923 so that he would be old enough to enlist. Charlie served in the Navy through World War II and the Korean War. As a beach battalion member, Charlie made landings in North Africa, Sicily, and Anzio. After leaving the Navy, Charlie met his wife Marianne while both were attending college in Washington, DC. Charlie became an active member of the Masonic Lodge and is a past master. While pursuing a successful sales career, Charlie proudly supported Marianne’s career as a Management Consultant. They traveled all over the world, took cruises in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, and flew on the Concorde. When not traveling, Charlie and Marianne lived near Leonardtown, Maryland; first in Breton Bay, then in a waterfront home on Richardson Road. They moved from Leonardtown, Maryland to Park City, Utah in 1996 so that Marianne could be closer to frequent work assignments on the Wasatch Front. Charlie and Marianne became active in the Park City community, attending America’s Openings, Sundance, and volunteering at the Egyptian Theater. They were very proud of living and working in Park City. Charlie and the family were stunned when Marianne died in 1999. Instead of shrinking from life, Charlie got out, made friends, and traveled by car. He loved to drive, and would drive to Maryland for his birthday each year to eat Blue Crabs. Many people in the Park City area befriended him, and he touched the lives of all his friends. He became a fixture at Alpine Sports Medicine and could often be found discussing cars at Mike Hale Chevrolet. Charlie is preceded in death by his wife Marianne, and his brothers Richard and John Edward (Eddie). He is survived by sons Charles Gary Hoffman of Virginia, Craig Hoffman of South Carolina, and Charles C. (Kirk) Hoffman, III of Friendswood, Texas, and by six grandchildren. Graveside services and Interment will be held at 11 AM Saturday, June 9, 2007, alongside Marianne in the Park City Cemetery. For those desiring, memorials may be made in Charlie’s honor to the Hospice Care Team, 1708 Amburn, Suite C, Texas City, TX 77591; (409) 938-0070 or (800) 545-8738.
