Obituary of Mary Gates

Mary Evelyn Gates, age 80, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2008. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Peck; brothers, Bill Rathbun and George Rathbun; sister, Kathryn Garrett; grandchildren, Melissa Burke & her husband David, Kerrie Burnett & her husband, Mike, and Stephen Peck; great grandchildren, Taylor Burnett and Ethan Burnett; and a host of other family and friends. Mary was born on January 28, 1928, in Blackwell, Oklahoma. She came to the Houston area in 1952 and spent the last thirty one years in Pearland. Although she was small in stature, she had a large presence as a mother and also as a supervisor for Shell Oil. Mary loved spending time with her family and was affectionately known as “Mee Maw”. She loved being outdoors, especially at the beach, or fishing, baking pies, or doing crossword puzzles. In fact, Mary did the puzzles every morning and would then call her brother, George, so they could discuss or finish them together. In her younger days, Mary and John were often seen on their Harley riding down Main Street. Mary’s family will be receiving friends on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 9:00 am in the Clayton Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held immediately following at 10:00 am.
