Obituary of George Richard Derr

George Richard Derr, 96, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Derr; his loving wife of 61 years, Annie Mae Derr; three brothers and six sisters. George is survived by sons, Jim Derr and wife, Virginia; Bill Derr; grandchild, Jamie Derr; great grandchildren, Stephanie, Megan and Benjamin Derr; and a host of other family and friends. George proudly served his county in the United States Navy for over 26 years. He went to Pearl Harbor immediately following the attacks to work as a Ship Fitter. George helped repair and get the damaged ships back in service in record time to help win the war in the Pacific. He served as Company Commander for recruiting at Great Lakes Naval Station. George was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and proudly donated item that had been on the USS Arizona to the local VFW Post. He was a wonderful husband, father and provider for his family. George enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening in his earlier years which has left behind many great memories for his family. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. A graveside service with military honors for George will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:30 am at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038 with Father Jim Courville officiating.
