View Tribute Book With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the passing of Elisa A. Garza-Leal, who left this world on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the age of 57, following a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer.Elisa’s journey began when she was born in Dallas, Texas. Her sharp intellect and love for learning took her to Rice University and then to Penn State. When she returned to Houston, her enduring bond with her alma mater brought a beautiful gift into her life. Through fellow Rice alumni, a serendipitous introduction brought her to Luis, the man who would become her loving husband. Together, they built a life rooted in love, making Houston their permanent home and raising their two cherished daughters.Professionally, Elisa was a brilliant poet and teacher who generously shared her gifts with the world. She was passionate about social justice, mothering, and natural living, and her work was a beautiful reflection of her deep embrace of her culture. Her celebrated collection Regalos was a finalist for the National Poetry Series. She later used her own experience to teach writing workshops for cancer patients and survivors, turning struggle into a source of healing. At the heart of everything Elisa did was a profound love for her family and a belief in the importance of togetherness. She was a loving wife to Luis, a devoted mother to Paloma Isabel Leal and Nayeli Catalina Leal, a cherished daughter to Exiquio Garza and Eva R. Garza, and a dear sister to Gabriel Garza (wife, Sarah Ann Gomez-Garza) and Elias Reyes (wife, Candice Reyes). Her legacy of love, strength, and creativity will live on through them.
