Hattie Mae grew-up in Pearland, Texas, on her family’s dairy farm where she and her three older sisters spent the summers riding horses, going to the movies and enjoying the outdoors. Hattie Mae graduated as the Salutatorian from Pearland High School in 1940. After graduation she attended Texas Women’s University where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Education and later earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston. Hattie Mae taught in Sugar Land for one year before she was offered a position as the girls’ volleyball coach with Orange ISD. For 40 years, Hattie Mae taught physical education and driver’s education and successfully coached the girls’ volleyball and golf teams. In addition to her passion for sports and education she enjoyed racing her two corvettes in competitive endurance races. After she retired from teaching and coaching in 1985 she spent her days on the golf course, refereeing girls’ volleyball games throughout Texas and teaching defensive driving. During her time in Orange, she was an active member of the Vidor Church of Christ. She returned to Pearland in 2005 to live closer to family, and was often in the stands (home and away games) cheering on Pearland High School girls’ volleyball teams. She loved to spend time traveling with family and friends throughout the U.S. and overseas. Over the past 10 years she enjoyed being part of family weddings, vacations and the baptisms and birthday parties of her great-great-nieces.
Hattie Mae will be dearly missed by family and friends who admired her passion for her faith, family, sports, travel, chocolate and ice cream - in addition to her independent nature. In her honor, her family hopes you’ll enjoy chocolate cake and ice cream with those you love and remember her good-hearted spirit.
