Obituary of Mildred Gayle Johnston

Mildred Gayle Johnston, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. She is preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Bourne Dunaway; and husband, Eddie E. Johnston. Gayle is survived by her father, Von B. Dunaway; son, Gene Johnston and wife, Jill; brothers, Dean Dunaway and wife, Ginger, John Sumrall and wife, Beverly; grandchildren, Jillaina Ragle and husband, Nick, Liah Crumbley, Nicholas Johnston; great grandchildren, Kelsey Kennedy, Vivian Crumbley, Mya Ragle; and a host of other family and friends.
Gayle was very civic minded and had been a member of the Lion’s Club, Civitan Club and had served on the Mississippi Council for the Blind. She loved to travel, play the piano and loved all types of music. Gayle was an avid reader and collector of dog figurines. She was an animal lover at heart and had many special dogs throughout her life. Gayle was affectionately known as “Big Mom” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished spending time with them during family gatherings. Gayle will be laid to rest with her husband in Jackson, Mississippi. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Diabetes Association.
A memorial service will be held at Woodland Hills Baptist Church on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 10:00 am. A family graveside service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
