David was born in the once thriving village of Wesley on the Island of Dominica. Whose residents relied mainly on fishing and agriculture as the source of income. He came into the world on May 29th, 1930. The son of the late Gilbert Nathaniel and Georgianna Christmas, He attended the Wesley Government School and after leaving school attended trade school where he acquired the skills of carpentry, He built his first dwelling home ensuring his new bride and children would have secure shelter.
Garrick as he was widely known, was a humble, kind, and assertive person, often referred to as a Jack of all trade but he mastered them all. He was very good at what he did, He was a fisherman today, a farmer tomorrow, a builder the next day, a mechanic the other day, He was known to overhaul the engine of a vehicle and put it back together again. We would often see him dismantle his boat engine, wash the intricate parts and be able to put them all back together, we always marveled at this amazing feat. We admired our dad and saw him as a: Survivor, protector, great provider, A God-fearing man who taught his children the way of the lord, He was a disciplinarian and often misunderstood by those who loved him most. As adults we have since realized that had it not been for the disciplinary upbringing, we might not be where we are now. Thank you, dad, for everything.
