Elena Mireya Chesebrough Pereira, 85, of Shoreacres, Texas passed away peacefully on July 19th after a brief illness. She was born on June 6, 1928 in Santiago, Chile to her dear and loving mother Elena Romey de Castro and father Juan Alberto Chesebrough. Elena received her education at the Univerisdad Catolica de Valparaiso and the Universidad de Chile where she was graduated with a degree in social work. She received a Fulbright Scholarship to study for her M.S.W. at Our Lady of the Lake University of San Antonio. It was during this time that she met and fell in life long love with her husband Joseph Michael Pereira of Houston, Texas who predeceased her. Elena was the wonderful and loving mother of John, Amalia, Veronica and Andres. And loving grandmother of Michael, Zachary, Leah, William, Isabel and Sylvia and great grandmother of Aleah. Elena had many lifelong friends she cared for deeply both in Houston, throughout the United States and in her native Chile. Her family wishes to thank her many friends for returning Elena's love throughout her life. Elena had a fulfilling and rewarding career as a social worker, retiring at 80 after helping provide social services to those in need through several agencies including many years with Catholic Charities of Houston and the Ben Taub Hospital. In addition, Elena traveled extensively, was a wonderful conversationalist and lover of the arts, music, literature and her beautiful home and garden that brought her great joy as she neared the end of her life. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St Clare of Assisi, Catholic Church. 3131 El Dorado Blvd Houston, TX 77059, phone: (281) 286-7729.
