Emil Leonard Schaider

Emil L Schaider, 94, died peacefully on Thursday, March 12, with his son, Paul, by his side.
The son of Fred and Elizabeth (Neville) Schaider, Emil was born in Maple Heights, OH on October, 10, 1920. He was pre-deceased by his parents and 5 siblings, as well as a great-grandaughter, Clara Eileen Wetterauer. He attended St. Theresa’s Grade School and Holy Name High School in Cleveland. Discerning a vocation to the priesthood, from 1940-1941 he attended the Cleveland Seminary; from 1941-1943 he attended St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s, KY; and from 1943-1946 he attended St. Mary’s Seminary in La Porte, TX. He discovered that God had other plans: On October 24, 1948 he married his beloved Lucille Polker, and at that same time began a 35-year career with Exxon (then Humble Oil) in Baytown, TX. Settling in LaPorte, TX, they raised 10 children. After retiring from Exxon he devoted his time to his youngest daughter, Anna Marie, who was born with Down Syndrome. He was also a dedicated volunteer with the chaplaincy corps at M.D. Anderson Hospital, offering comfort and ministry to patients and their families.
Emil is survived by Lucille, his wife of 67 years, his children: Marianna Schaider Eggers and her husband, Owen; Leonard Schaider and his wife Becky; George Schaider and his wife, Stephanie; Rita Schaider Beard and her husband, Jerry; Madeline Schaider and her husband, Alan Blumenthal; David Schaider; Phillip Schaider and his partner, Sam Jimeson; Paul Schaider and his wife, Elaine; Theresa Schaider and her husband, Simon Sanchez; and Anna Marie Schaider. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren (2 on the way), and several nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 PM with a prayer service and Rosary at 7 PM, Friday, March 13, at St. Mary’s Church, 816 Park Drive, La Porte, TX. There will be an additional visitation at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 14, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, with Rev. Thomas Rafferty presiding.
