Funeral Service Monday, Jul 16, 2018 2:00 PM Kenneth Layton Smith March 23, 1930 - July 12, 2018 Kenneth Layton Smith was born on March 23, 1930 in Long Island, New York to Emily Margaret Smith and James Marshall Smith. Kenneth went to be with our Lord on July 12, 2018 at the age of 88. Kenneth was a loving husband to Melba Jean Fontenot Smith for 64 years. Kenneth and Melba spent their entire married lives in La Porte, TX, where they raised two sons, Keith Layton Smith and Kenneth Marshall Smith. The family enjoyed camping, traveling, and the outdoors. Kenneth also served as a Boy Scout Leader of troop 90. Kenneth served in the United States National Guard from 1951-1953 where he was assigned to the United States Air Force. He retired from Exxon Mobile in 1992, and after retirement he spent time volunteering for the La Porte Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He has been an active member of La Porte Community Church, and especially enjoyed making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at Vacation Bible School. Kenneth’s pride and joy was his family; children, grand children, and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emily and Marshall Smith, and his son Kenneth Marshall Smith. He is survived by his wife Melba Jean Fontenot Smith; his son Keith Layton Smith and wife Patricia Evangeline Smith; his grandchildren Julie Smith Bennett and husband Wesley Bennett, Scott Layton Smith and wife Caitlyn Haynes Smith, and Daniel Austin Smith; his great grandchildren Jenna Paige Smith, Cara Leigh Smith, and Sadie Evangeline Bennett; and his numerous relatives and friends. Kenneth was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend.
