Obituary of Lester Duane Sparks

Lester Duane Sparks August 04, 1928 - October 05, 2014 Lester Duane Sparks, age 86, of La Porte, Texas passed away October 5th, 2014 at home, following an illness of several weeks. He was born August 4th, 1928 in Texas County, Ok to Lester Ward Sparks and Amy (Sanborn) Sparks. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M with a degree in Business and Finance. He retired early to care for his wife of forty-three years, Twila Thomas, who passed away August of 1991. Their children include daughters Bonny Sutterfield and husband John of Pearland, Texas; Rose Ann Simpson and James of Deer Park, Texas; and sons Donald Sparks and wife Kerrelyn of Katy, Texas; Steven Sparks and wife Angie of Liverpool, Texas. His beloved sister Priscilla (Pat) Stevens is living in Hugoton, KS. He is also a grandfather to seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Lester, upon retirement, began thirty years with H&R Block, ending April 15th of this year. On January 9th, 1993 Lester married Alice Whitmore (McCune) of La Porte, Texas. This added Christy Whitmore of Pearland, Texas and David Whitmore of Garden Grove, California to the family. Lester joined St. John’s Episcopal Church at this time and during nearly twenty-two years has served on Vestry, the After School Program at the church, the Men’s Bible Study Wednesday mornings, and the Elderberry’s with friends he loved to be with. He was also very active in the La Porte Senior Center and the Red Suspenders. The funeral services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 815 So. Broadway, La Porte, Texas, 77571, at noon on Saturday, October 11th, 2014. A reception will follow immediately after services.
