Walter “Walt” Eugene Hillin, age 84 of Pearland, was called to his heavenly home on July 3, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie & Justene (Teal) Hillin; and wife Annette Hillin. He is survived by his sons, Bill Hillin & his wife Cris, and Norman Hillin; brothers, Joe Hillin & his wife Martha, Bob Hillin & his wife Linda, and Harold Hillin & his wife Vida; sister, Juanita Janecka; grandchildren, Sherri Burks & her husband Terry, and Rachel Alexander; and five great-grandchildren.
Walt was born on March 8, 1926 in Rosebud, Texas and resided in the Pearland area for the last 40 years. He was a switchman for SouthWestern Bell for 32 years and was a member of the Pioneers of America. Walt loved tending his garden where he grew tomatoes, green beans, okra, onions and potatoes. He was a cook while proudly serving in the U.S. Army, and later used this skill for cooking at his family gatherings. He enjoyed preparing the holiday meals and everyone looked forward to his desserts, especially “Chocolate Pudding Delight”. Around town, Walt was known as the “Soap Man” because he made all types of fragrant and medicinal soaps. He would later give these soaps, along with his vegetables, to anyone who needed them. Walt and Annette enjoyed traveling to Branson , Missouri and also attended Opry houses in Alvin and Manvel. Throughout the years, Walt’s family would often meet at their bay house in Boliver. He was very industrious and built this house as well as his home in Pearland. Walt will be remembered for his kind and giving heart and will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved him.
Visitation for Walt will be on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Clayton Funeral Home. The Funeral Services are Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 1:00 pm at First United Methodist Church , 2314 N. Grand Blvd. , Pearland , Texas 77581 , 281-485-1466. Dr. Bob Joiner will be officiating. Interment will follow at SouthPark Cemetery in Pearland , Texas .
